Andy Burnham offers advice to students at Wigan and Leigh college

The former Labor Member of Parliament at Leigh spent significant time with tier III General Services and HND students on his first visit to the new Center for Advanced Technical Studies campus.

He spoke about his journey in politics and becoming the first elected mayor of Greater Manchester, as well as a wide range of topics from his experience with Westminster and being in Cabinet under the Labor government, to his thoughts on the state of politics now.

The mayor answered questions prepared by some of the learners including; What changes will he implement in Greater Manchester to tackle climate change, what are his biggest pressures as mayor, and why is bus travel in the area so expensive.

Mr. Burnham gave much advice to the educated, and inspired them to get involved in politics – if they were interested in pursuing this path, and how they should have the belief that they could do so.

He said, “I could not believe at your age that I could do what I did. You can often achieve more than you think if you maintain a sense of faith and focus.”

James Simpson, a sophomore Unified Protection Services level three student, was particularly comforted by the mayor’s motivating words: “He has inspired all of us and taught us that if you want to do anything in life, you can achieve it.”

Public Services Lecturer, Tony Evans, added: “It was an honor to welcome Andy to meet our students.

They enjoyed meeting an influential person who grew up in similar circumstances to many of them, and they were inspired to see that anyone with the right will and inclination can make a difference.

“It was a great opportunity for our learners.”
