Golden LEAF Scholarship application for the academic year 2022-2023 is now available at CFNC.org. A total of 215 prizes will be presented to first-time recipients of Rehabilitation of rural, economically troubled or tobacco-dependent counties. Applications are submitted on March 1.
Awards are valued at $14,000 ($3,500 annually for up to four years) for North Carolina high school students attending a participating North Carolina college or university. Transferred North Carolina Community College students can earn $3,500 annually for up to three years.
This year, the Golden LEAF Board of Directors increased the award amount from $12,000 to $14,000 over four years. Existing scholarship recipients will receive an increase in the award beginning in the fall of 2022.
Golden LEAF President and CEO Scott T. said, “Our goal is for Golden LEAF scholars to gain the talent, knowledge, and skills needed to help rural communities in North Carolina thrive by returning home to live, work and raise families.”
To be eligible, students must be a graduate of a North Carolina high school or a currently enrolled student at a converted North Carolina community college, and enrolled full-time in the fall in Participation in a public or private college or university in North Carolina. Recipients are selected based on multiple factors including the intent to return to rural North Carolina after graduation. Applicants must also complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) and demonstrate financial need as determined by the application process; Have a GPA of at least 2.5; and be a resident of a rural North Carolina county that is economically distressed and/or dependent on tobacco. click here For the full list of eligible counties. For more than 20 years, the Golden LEAF Scholarship Program has provided more than 6,000 scholarships to help rural students enter state colleges and universities.

Students who are awarded a LEAF Gold Scholarship to attend North Carolina colleges and universities are also eligible to participate in leadership development and additional training opportunities. These experiences allow scholars to participate in paid internships in their area of career interest, grow their professional networks, and build key communication and leadership skills.
