The Robesonian, Lumberton, North Carolina

ROCKY MOUNT – Eligible North Carolina high school seniors and transfer students from community colleges have until March 1 to apply for the LEAF Gold Scholarship.

LEAF Gold announced Thursday that a total of 215 scholarships will be offered to first-time recipients from eligible rural, economically distressed or tobacco-dependent counties. Each scholarship is worth $14,000 – $3,500 annually for up to four years – for North Carolina high school students attending a participating North Carolina college or university. Students transferred from a state community college can receive $3,500 annually for up to three years.

This year, the Golden LEAF Board of Directors increased the award amount from $12,000 to $14,000 over four years. Existing scholarship recipients will receive an increase in the award starting in the fall of 2022.

Scott T. said: Hamilton, Golden LEAF President and CEO: “The Golden LEAF Scholarship Program is an important component of the organization’s workforce readiness strategy.” “Our goal is for Golden LEAF scholars to acquire the talent, knowledge, and skills needed to help rural North Carolina communities thrive by returning home to live, work and raise families.”

To be eligible, students must be a North Carolina high school graduate or a current North Carolina community college student, enrolled full-time in the fall at a public or private NC college or university, according to Golden LEAF. Recipients are selected based on multiple factors, to include intent to return to rural North Carolina upon graduation. Applicants must also complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid, or FAFSA, and demonstrate financial need as determined by the application process. They must also have a GPA of at least 2.5 and be residents of an economically distressed rural North Carolina county and/or dependent on tobacco.
