Artsbridge scholarship program taking applications | News, Sports, Jobs

PARKERSBURG — Applications are being taken by Artsbridge for two local college scholarships established by the founder of the American Pops Orchestra in honor of his grandmothers.

Parkersburg native Luke Frazier in 2019 approached Artsbridge about a yearly scholarship for graduating high school seniors who will pursue fine arts in college.

Called the Donna Campbell Award for Excellence, the scholarship is for $1,500 for the first semester of college. Two students will be chosen for the scholarship award, each for $1,500.

The scholarship application and scoring guide are distributed to local high school guidance counselors, administrators and fine arts teachers. The application and information also are available at artsbridgeonline.org.

Frazier also established an award for an outstanding fine arts teacher, the Janet Frazier Award for Excellence, also named for his grandmother.

Two winners are chosen each year, a fine arts teacher in elementary or middle school and a fine arts teacher in high school. Recipients will receive $1,000 for classroom supplies and a gift basket of locally made items.

Nominations can be made by parents, students, administrators and fellow teachers, among others. Nominees must be teaching arts, music or drama.

Nomination applications also are on the Artsbridge website, artsbridgeonline.org, under “Arts Education” and by calling Artsbridge at 304-428-3988 and requesting it be emailed or mailed.

Applications can be emailed to Drsdiannedavis@gmail.com with scholarship application or award nomination in the subject line, or mailed to Artsbridge, PO Box 1706, Parkersburg, WV 26102, and put to the attention of Dianne Davis, board president.

The deadline to apply is Feb. 28.

The scholarship awards are available to all students in Wood, Ritchie, Pleasants, Jackson, Roane, Doddridge, Tyler and Wirt counties.

Frazier is a classically trained pianist. He created the American Pops Orchestra in 2015.

He presentations in schools and has been hosted by Artsbridge for the past two years in its Artists-On-Tour school tour performances.
