Diana Al-Hadid: Longing Archives

Diana Al-HadidThe work explores the interaction between the female body and European art canon. Histories and legends of Syrians, Muslims and immigrants; Architectural icons and the natural world. Born in 1981 in Aleppo, Syria, and raised in Cleveland, Ohio, she creates artwork that expresses her interest in merging cultures and translating disparate narratives. This single exhibition in Henry Art Gallery It will consist of a selection of 13 sculptural works made between 2010 and 2021 that have been combined into interpretive collections for the first time. Together, the sculptures identify the artist’s investigation of historical, mythological, and biblical accounts of women as a baseline of her practice.

Primed in Black: Derek Adams and Barbara Earl Thomas

black filled Collecting artists’ works Derek Adams (b. 1970, Baltimore, MD) and Barbara Earl Thomas (b. 1948, Seattle, Washington) in a collaborative multimedia installation developed from their shared dialogue on representation, black identity, and practices of cultural resistance. This exhibition is a synthesis of a multi-year, intergenerational and cross-country exchange between New York-based Adams and Seattle-based Thomas that began after the two artists offered to work side-by-side in a group show at the Savannah College of Art and Design in 2017.
