As others leave, Ballet school finds new home at Stamford mall

Stamford – The ballet school in Stamford’s new home was ready for her arrival.

Approximately 5,000 square feet provide enough space for more than 80 students in the school. Lighting, ventilation and sprinkler systems are also classified. The dressing rooms have already been built as well.

But its new location is not a performing arts center. Instead, students of The Ballet School train next to Macy’s department store, in a space that once housed a carpet showroom and Ann Taylor clothing store.

The opening of A Dance Space last month – the new center on the fifth floor of Stamford Town Center that Ballet School shares with Parsons Dance Company – reflects the evolution of the downtown shopping mall. As the mall grapples with many of the vacancies created through store closings in the past few years, non-commercial establishments have become increasingly important to maintaining its vitality—a mission the ballet school is keen to uphold.

“We had some great conversations with them (managing the mall) about the future,” Marty Etter, co-founder and CEO of The Ballet School, said in an interview at A Dance Space. “To make an investment like this, we had to believe in them.”

“A very unique space”
