Avon Garden Club plants seeds for adults-only Easter egg hunt

Avon, Ohio – Kids are always happy to hear that the Easter bunny is approaching. But the Avon Garden Club has adults jumping for joy too.

why? Because the club will bring back the adults-only Easter egg hunt on April 9th.

The event is a fundraising campaign for scholarships, according to Scholarships Committee Chair Cynthia Morniak-Chernicki.

“Scholarships are available to high school seniors residing in Avon who will major in a course of study aligned with Avon Garden Club’s mission,” she said.

Only persons with a proposed academic study in agriculture, botany, forestry, horticulture, landscape or natural resources are eligible for this scholarship.

Proceeds from 2022 Adults Only Easter Egg Hunt will benefit “our scholarship program. Through our scholarship program, we encourage and support high school seniors … as they study and achieve careers in fields aligned with Avon Garden Club’s mission,” she said.

Early in the pandemic, the club made a version of the egg hunt. But this year, Morniak-Chernicki said, “We are doing a full field tour at Veterans Memorial Park to look for eggs. It looks like a blast.”

She noted that there would be more than 900 eggs to find. One out of every 20 eggs wins a special prize. There will also be a 50/50 raffle on a gas stove donated by Avon Lowe’s, and the Easter Bunny will be present for the photos.

“We are a garden club,” said Morniak Czarnicki. “Among our other community service projects, we take on beautification projects, such as garden maintenance and seasonal decorating in Miller Nature Preserve and in the garden and gazebo in Heritage Park.

“We also add charm and enhance the look of the city with the plantings in bridge boxes on Detroit Road.

“We enjoy being outside, and we encourage people to be outside to appreciate and enjoy nature. We sponsor this event to bring the community together for a fun outdoor event, raise awareness of the availability of the scholarship program and attract interested parties to apply for the scholarship.”

“What better way to do this than to bring the community together in one of our beautiful city parks for a festive outdoor event?”

She also thanked the city for its assistance in the event.

“We appreciate the city of Avon’s generosity, as it allows us to engage the community through the use of the multifunctional facilities at Veterans Memorial Park for the 2022 Adults Only Easter Egg Hunt.”

Those who wish to apply for scholarships should email avongcscholarship@gmail.com for an application, then send it to Avon Garden Club Scholarship Committee, PO Box 213, Avon, OH 44011.

For complete eligibility and application information, interested people may also contact a high school guidance counselor. Note that the application must be postmarked by March 1. Scholarship recipients will be notified no later than May 1.
