A former teacher in British Columbia has been banned from applying to become a teacher for nine months after he was found to have engaged in “improper” physical contact with female students during extracurricular activities he organized.

According to a commissioner of the Teachers Regulation Resolution issued recently on December 16 BC, Alvin Yek-Bun Lau asked female students at his Burnaby school to volunteer outside of class time for a research project on sports.

The summary of the consent decision reads, “During that period he engaged in inappropriate physical contact with them.”

“Lao used his position as a teacher to provide the opportunity to engage in inappropriate physical contact with female students,” the decision reads. “Lao’s behavior made the students feel very uncomfortable and adversely affected their learning environment.”

The incidents occurred between September 2017 and June 2018.

As per the decision, Lau became a registered teacher in 2011 and stopped teaching in September 2019.

In January 2021, the school district reported Lau to the Teachers Regulation Commissioner.

He resigned from the Burnaby School District in January 2021 and his teacher certification was revoked in November of that year for non-payment of annual fees.

In the consent decision summary, Lau agreed that his conduct constituted professional misconduct.

He also agreed that he would not apply to restore the teacher’s certificate for nine months.

The Ministry of Education said that to protect the identity of the students, a summary summary of the approval decision has been published in this case only.
