Department of English Announces Spring 2022 Club Meeting Dates

The English Department is home to a variety of clubs to participate in and receive support from like-minded individuals. The English Club, Professional Writing Club, and Messages in a Bottle meet this spring.

The English Club is a student-run organization that is open to all majors and disciplines, with one basic condition being an interest in the world of literature and writing. The club also hosts open mic readings, where individuals can share work or enjoy listening to others’ creative projects in a relaxed environment.

“I think the English Club is a useful space for people who have a common interest and love for English literature and the language itself. It is not a book or writing club and more of an informal gathering of people with common interests. I use it to hang out, bounce ideas, and generally have a good time more than Nothing else. It is worth noting that the Goldenrod Poetry event will take place this semester,” said the President of the English Language Club, Seth Nevin.

The selected dates for the English Club and open mic readings are TBA.

The Professional Writing Club, supervised by Assistant Professor and Training Coordinator, Dr. Angela Jones, is another club to look out for this semester. January 2022 marks the fifth year since the club was established in 2017. The club is sponsored by an information security company, KirkpatrickPrice, whose professional writers host meetings and provide advice.

Club meetings are intended to provide an opportunity to learn about opportunities for professional writers and discuss ways to navigate an ever-changing workforce. Dr. Jones emphasizes the overarching goals of demonstrating the benefits of a professional or secondary writing concentration, educating students about career options, and helping students obtain careers in this field.

The Zoom Writing Club will meet on the first Tuesday of every month on the following dates:

Tuesday February 1, 4:30 p.m.

Tuesday March 1, 4:30 p.m.

Tuesday, April 5, 4:30 p.m.

See the English section calendar for Zoom links for meetings.

Another club option, Messages in a Bottle, is a workshop-based creative writing club open to all disciplines. “We offer group feedback and workshop activities for all styles of creative writing, including plays, scripts, poems, novels, short stories, nonfiction essays and fast fiction,” said Sarah Stevens, vice president of the club.

“Messages in a Bottle are a great way to make friends and get feedback on your writing, especially if you have a busy schedule,” Stevens said. “In practice, sharing your work with other writers can help you improve your writing and speaking skills, and we do our best to give everyone the time and space to improve their chosen traits.”

Messages in a Bottle will meet every Wednesday at 4 p.m. at Cherry Hall 125, with zoom and asynchronous options available. The first meeting is scheduled for Wednesday, February 2, 2022.
