Burlington County authorities say a 35-year-old Trenton drug dealer is accused of causing the death of an Eastampton man who overdosed on fentanyl last year.
According to Burlington County District Attorney Scott Covina, Robert Rentas was arrested December 1 and charged with strict first-degree liability for drug-related death and third-degree distribution of a dangerous controlled substance.
Covina office says,
The investigation began on November 12, 2020, after emergency medical personnel and officers from the Eastampton Township Police Department were sent to a home to obtain a report on a 34-year-old unresponsive man. Narcan was given and chest compressions were performed, but it was determined by EMS workers at the scene that he had died and beyond resuscitation efforts.
An autopsy determined that the death resulted from fentanyl toxicity and that the drugs that led to the overdose were purchased from Rantas, according to Covina.
A detention hearing is scheduled for Friday in the Supreme Court.
The public is reminded that charges are accusations and that all persons are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
