Flyer Legal Promise provides full law school tuition, $15,000 stipend, job after graduation : University of Dayton, Ohio

Dayton law firms Thompson Hine and Taft Law are partnering with the University of Dayton School of Law to recruit underrepresented and disadvantaged students into the law school and the legal profession. The Flyer Legal Promise will provide two students with a full law school education, a stipend of $15,000 for living expenses, mentors, a summer internship, and a job at a postgraduate company.

“Instead of waiting for diverse talent to progress to law school and later into elite law firms, the Flyer Legal Promise Program proactively seeks to recruit and invest academically talented undergraduate students who have the potential to excel in the legal profession,” said Andrew Strauss, UD. Dean of the Faculty of Law.

The program will primarily recruit students from the University of Dayton’s Flyer Promise Program, which began in 2017 and provides funding and mentoring assistance for underrepresented and disadvantaged students coming from UD’s partner high schools. Read more about UD’s Flyer Promise here.

Other students who are not in the Flyer Promise may be proposed by the admissions offices of UD or the School of Law.

The University of Dayton School of Law is committed to accepting people from diverse backgrounds and experiences. The School of Law was named one of the Best Law Schools for African Americans in the Winter 2020 Edition of Preliminary Law for National Jurists magazine. One-third of 2021 students entering class at school are students from underrepresented and disadvantaged groups. Students can participate in the Diversity Summer Internship Program, the Minority Summer Internship Program, the Association of Black Law Students, the Asia Pacific Law Students Association, and the Hispanic Law Students Association, to name a few.

“Diversity is important to the educational and social enrichment of law school, the community and the legal profession,” Strauss said.

The University of Dayton Law School saw a new wave of success, posting improvements in selectivity, law school admission test averages, incoming student GPAs, attorneys pass rate, and job placement. The College of Law is attracting more applicants and more academically excelling students by providing flexibility with additional options such as the online hybrid JD program, 3+2 programs to complete Bachelor and Law degrees faster, and an Honors in Leadership program featuring full scholarships. Leadership training, mentoring by eminent judges and lawyers.

“The Flyer Legal Promise will certainly add to the offerings that will attract highly qualified law students and future lawyers,” Strauss said.

Once here, all law students participate in a curriculum and support system geared toward passing the bar exam, as well as programs that allow students to immerse themselves in specific areas of law such as the school’s program in Law and Technology and collaborations with the UD Human Rights Center and Hanley Sustainability Institute.
