Oakland County, MI – Eligible Oakland County residents who are employed or enrolled in a qualifying post-secondary education or credit program and are struggling to pay for childcare can apply for a scholarship to help cover a portion of these expenses.

The Oakland County Child Care Scholarship Program, funded by the U.S. Rescue Plan, is administered by the Oakland County Michigan Works! Each scholarship is worth $1,200 and will be available to the first 1,000 eligible families to apply at Oakland County Michigan Works! Service Center. Childcare services must be provided by a licensed childcare home.

According to a September 2020 study by the Center for American Progress, the average monthly cost of child care at the center in Michigan has increased 61 percent since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic, to $1,251 per child. Nationally, child care Costs rose an average of 47 percent during this period.

“We know that one of the biggest obstacles to people returning to work during the COVID-19 pandemic is affordable child care,” said Oakland County Executive David Coulter. “This scholarship program is designed to make it easier for struggling families to make sure their children are looked after by trusted licensed providers.”

Coulter added that the Child Care Scholarship Program helps support Oakland80, one of Oakland County’s key priorities — to obtain 80 percent of the county’s population eligible for a degree or advanced accreditation by 2030.
