Gary Jackson has been selected as Student Leader of the Month for November.
First student Gary Jackson has been selected as Student of the Month Leader for November 2021. Jackson, originally from Pocahontas, Arkansas, came to U of A to study biology and chemistry. He currently works with students with refugees and the affiliated student government as the Director of Physical Health, and is the Find Your Impact Coordinator at the Center for Voluntary Action. In addition to his participation, Jackson is the leader of small groups in the Potter House.
Jackson said he got involved with these organizations because he always strives to make a difference in whatever community he belongs to. “I knew I had come to campus as a new student and wanted to put myself in positions where I could serve others,” he said. “I tried to find [organizations] Which better complements my skill set as a leader and interests my interests in order to maximize my influence in those positions.”
Jackson believes that every great leader should be an active listener, a strong communicator and always strive to be aware of their weaknesses so that they can improve themselves. His advice to other students is to empower others. “The best leaders I have seen or been able to work with are not those who focus on the strength that comes with their position, but those who use their position to empower others to become leaders themselves.”
Jackson would like to thank Pierce Rittnauer for being such a wonderful mentor to him. “Pearce is someone who works selflessly to complete my work in the best possible way, whether that is by providing insight into ideas I might have, helping open doors to opportunities I might not be able to open myself, or encouraging collaboration on certain ideas. Perhaps Sometimes it helps me connect with the right people.” “Knowing him as a leader and mentor is something I find invaluable in everything I do, and cannot thank him enough.”
The Student of the Month award, sponsored by the New Student and Family Programs, is given to undergraduate students at the U of A for their leadership excellence through campus involvement or leadership activities or through volunteering and community service.
