Kenyari Sawyer, 17, is a 4.0 student at Monroe Comprehensive High School in Albany. She’s currently in the duel enrollment program at Albany State University majoring in criminal justice and says she wants to become a defense attorney.
Sawyer told WALB that despite her success, she wasn’t very confident going into the college application process and was denied to one of her school choices early on.

“I thought I wasn’t smart enough. It’s a hard process and I have been denied by one of my schools, and it was Mercer University,” Sawyer said. “And so after I got denied, I just thought I might not get accepted into anymore. It was a setback.”
She’s since been accepted to Howard University, Spelman College and the University of Georgia, just to name a few. UGA awarded her the University of Georgia Certificate of Merit.
Monroe Principal Frederick Polite said Sawyer represents everything the school’s staff works to instill in their students.
“She’s what we strive for here at Monroe,” Polite said. “She’s a great student, she’s got a good head on her shoulders and she knows what she wants and isn’t afraid to go out and do the work to get it.”
