Germany: Number of Int’l Occasional Students Surges by 4%

Occasional students are returning in Germany, as the number of such students increased by four per cent during the winter semester of 2021/2022, peaking at 27,400 students.

According to the Federal Statistical Office (Destatis), occasional students which include students that attend one course or module in a specific country, are showing more interest in the matter this year than they did the year before, SchengenVisaInfo.com reports.

However, despite the four per cent surge, which equals 1,096 students, the number of occasional students had dropped by 26 per cent compared with pre-pandemic levels, when 37,200 students visited Germany.

Data from Erudera, the first education search platform backed by AI, reveals that the total number of international students in Germany is 416,437, with 324,729 or 78 per cent of those being international students and 91,708 being resident national students.

Furthermore, the data shows that international student enrollment has surged by 38.1 per cent from 2014 to 2021.

China and India are the main student sources for Germany, with 40,122 and 28,542 students, respectively. Syrian (16,931) and Austria (13,612) follow while Russia is ranked fifth in the most international students in the country, with 10,573 students.

Other countries of origin for international students include the following:

  • Iran (10,561)
  • Turkey (10,018)
  • Italy (8,576)
  • Cameroon (7,970)
  • Tunisia (6,729)
  • Ukraine (6,572)
  • France (6,532)

The United States concludes this list with 4,755 students recorded in Germany for this time period. In addition, the most sought program in Germany is Engineering, with a total of 136,579 students, followed by Law, Economics, and Social Services with 79,416 students.

Mathematics and Natural Sciences and Humanities rank third and fourth with 33,341 and 28,700 international students, respectively, while the number of international students pursuing an academic degree in Art and Art Studies peaks at 13,110.

Agriculture, Forestry, Nutritional Science, and Veterinary Medicine recorded 5,441 international students in Germany, while other study fields count 1,910 students.

On the other hand, there are nearly 138,000 German students attending their studies abroad, with 30,231 students being recorded in Austria, followed by the Netherlands with 22,439 students and the United Kingdom with 14,145 students.

Switzerland (11,536) and the United States (9,242) follow the list, while 8,079 German students are studying in China.

Other host countries with the highest numbers of German students include France with 4,715 students, Turkey (4,022), Hungary (3,447), and Denmark (2,980).

Furthermore, about 40,852 German students are in the Erasmus programme, with 28,715 out of them being enrolled in universities and 12,140 students being enrolled in Universities of Applied Sciences.
