‘Girls ought to know…’: JNU’s ‘victim-blaming’ advice to women on sexual harassment draws ire

In an advisory issued in preparation for a student counseling session, the National Unity University Internal Complaints Committee stated: “Girls are supposed to know how to draw a line (between themselves and their male friends) to avoid any such harassment.”

The Internal Complaints Commission (ICC) of Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) has drawn criticism for its advice to women on how to avoid sexual harassment. In an advisory note issued in preparation for an orientation session for students, the committee stated: “Girls are supposed to know how to draw a line (between themselves and their male friends) to avoid any such harassment.”

Student groups, including the All India Students’ Association, have raised concerns about counselling.

The first consultative session is scheduled for January 27, 2022.

This exposes the victim-blaming attitude of the International Criminal Court. This advisory session is a hoax and will only make JNU an unsafe space for women,” AISA said in a statement.

In a post, the University of New York’s International Criminal Court said the counseling session is needed to “educate both girls and boys) what constitutes sexual harassment.

“Boys generally (sometimes by advertising, sometimes unintentionally) cross the fine line between friendly banter and sexual harassment,” the post adds.

“Girls are supposed to know how to draw a concrete line (between themselves and their male friends) to avoid such harassment [sic], “.
