Ds Scholarship

Graduates at these 6 Houston-area school districts can receive free college tuition at San Jacinto College

Houston San Jacinto College has received an anonymous donation that will pay tuition for up to three years for every student who graduates in 2021 from schools in the tax district.

These areas include Laporte ISD, Channelview ISD, Galena Park ISD, Sheldon ISD, Pasadena ISD, and Deer Park ISD. It is estimated that there will be nearly 5,000 graduates from those six school districts this year. The money will cover all of them.

The college has created a 21 Forward Scholarship for these students. The scholarship is good for up to three years. Students must enroll this fall and take a minimum of six credits each semester (they can take more, but six is the minimum).

This scholarship does not cover the cost of books and supplies. However, a San Jacinto College representative said there are other funding sources that can help with this.

When this news reached KPRC 2 News, we had questions. San Jacinto answered them all.

Q: What type of degree can students get from San Jacinto College?

aStudents can obtain a two-year undergraduate degree in 8 subject areas. You can also get a workforce certificate to use for a job in a chemical plant or refinery. It usually takes one year to complete.

Q: What is the approximate value of the scholarship?

a: Tuition is $78 per credit hour. Obtaining 12 credits qualifies you as a full-time student. That would cost the student $936 per semester. If a student takes 12 hours in summer, spring, and fall for a 3-year period, the scholarship will cover $8,424 in tuition fees.

Q: What about 2021 graduates who have already applied and registered at San Jacinto College for the summer or fall semester?
