Greater Bristol Branch Of NAACP Accepting Applications For Scholarship Fund

February 3, 2022

The Greater Bristol Chapter of the NAACP is accepting applications for its recently established scholarship fund with the Main Street Community Foundation.

Samantha Ragot, Scholarships and Programs Officer at the Main Street Community Foundation, said applications are being accepted through March 11.

“Last year, the Greater Bristol Chapter of the NAACP established a scholarship fund to help advance equality through educational opportunity,” she said. Two $500 scholarships will be awarded. Graduating high school seniors from Bristol, Burlington, Harwinton, Plainville, Plymouth and Southington are eligible to apply.

The Greater Bristol Chapter of the NAACP has been around since the 1970s and was formally reorganized in 1985 as part of an effort led by Reverend Dr. Eddie C. Whitehead.

The NAACP established Rev. Dr. Eddy C. Whitehead of Bristol CT – The Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Scholarship Fund in 2021 to honor Whitehead’s mission in promoting educational opportunity. The first scholarship awarded from this fund will be awarded this spring.

“The Greater Bristol chapter of the NAACP has awarded scholarships to local students in the past, but the partnership with the Main Street Community Foundation allows this scholarship to be permanent now,” said Eric Clemons, president of the Greater Bristol Chapter of the NAACP. “This fund was created so that the Greater Bristol Branch of the NAACP can create a legacy for the communities we serve. At the same time, we remember the efforts of men and women like Dr. King and Reverend Whitehead, who dream of ensuring educational opportunities and the shares now live through this fund forever.”
