Kids across the country are gaining a lot of “green” after being selected as the “best in the state” in the third grade Bonnie Plants wrapped program. This year, nearly 200,000 third graders in the neighboring 48 states gained hands-on horticultural experience growing giant cabbage, with one student in each state receiving a $1,000 tuition scholarship from Bonnie Plants, The largest grower of botanicals and herbs in the United States.

Loudoun’s Nolan Moore, a student at Trinity Christian, received a $1,000 scholarship from Bonnie as well as the bragging rights to “best in the state” to grow an 8-pound cabbage.

“We’re relaunching the 3rd grade cabbage program in the spring as a safe and friendly distance learning activity to inspire kids of all backgrounds to develop a love of gardening,” said Mike Sutterer, President and CEO of Bonnie Plants. “After stopping the program last year due to the COVID-19 pandemic, we are pleased to once again see so many students able to participate and learn the basics of gardening as well as life lessons such as responsibility, self-confidence and achievement.”

At the start of the program, Bonnie sent each student an initial cabbage plant and lessons for nurturing and caring for their plant every step of the way. Students took a picture with their cabbage when it was fully grown and presented it for a chance to win a $1,000 scholarship. The winners were selected by Bonnie in collaboration with the state’s Departments of Agriculture based on students’ enthusiasm for participation and learning as well as the overall size and appearance of the cabbage.

Subscription to the cabbage program for the third grade is free. Fall registration for those in USDA Grandma Zones 8-11 is now open. Educators and parents can click here to register their class or student. Registration opens in January for the spring growing season.
