HBKU students shine in client counseling contest

DOHA: A team of two first-year law students (JD) from Hamad Bin Khalifa University College of Law (HBKU) showcased their legal interviewing skills during the Amity University International Consulting Competition (AUICC), which was held online on December 11-12 . .

Team members Aisha Bashir and Tasnim Ahmed Elias Hussain, who were trained by Professor Hillary Bell at the College of Law, took second place overall in the second edition of the competition run by the Dubai-based university.

Thirteen teams from Qatar, the United Arab Emirates, India, Bangladesh and Pakistan participated in the competition.

Teams conducted a mock interview with the client and were ranked based on their ability to discern relevant legal issues, advise on issues to their client, and build a relationship with the client.

The Law School team participated in three rounds, dealing with tort law, criminal law and contract law.

Bashir said: “The competition provided us with a tremendous opportunity to gain hands-on experience advising clients and constructively apply our legal knowledge. The judges’ comments were invaluable, as was my entire experience.”

Hussain echoed those sentiments, saying, “The American University of Lawyers has been a rich learning experience that simulates the various challenges involved in meeting clients’ expectations, and has shown us what the privilege and responsibility of a lawyer is.”

Professor Bell said: “The outstanding attitudes of our students were key to their success. Although they only completed one semester of Law School, they threw themselves into preparing for the competition. In return, they enjoyed a valuable learning experience and confidently represented the Law School, making it to the Tour. last of the competition.

CMRU School of Legal Studies from India was awarded the 1st position.
