Here’s an art show in the cage-free cattery at Yucaipa Animal Placement Society – Redlands Daily Facts

The Yucaipa Animal Placement Society (YAPS) is hosting its first Creative Critters Art Show 5:30-8 pm Friday, Feb. 25, in the cage-free cattery at YAPS.

The event will feature art created by more than 40 students from Yucaipa High School, pieces from Yucaipa High School art teachers and art by 10 local artists.

The donated art will be auctioned off to the highest bidder via silent auction and all proceeds will benefit the homeless cats and dogs at YAPS as they await adoption, according to a news release.

Participating students’ entries will be eligible to win awards. Auction and awards will be announced at 7 pm

Local artists who have donated art for the show are Athene Johnston, Kitty Stephens, Janet Esparza and Carol Lima, who are members of the Redlands Art Association; and Mike McAlmond, Marsi Gutierrez, Aurora Cobb, Mary Beth Coutts, Jeff Rosenfeld and Dave McGann.

Stephens and Esparza are also jurors for the artwork submitted by Yucaipa High School students.

Athene Johnston, another of the Redlands Art Association members participating, is 90 and was most prolific with her art in her 80s. She studied oil painting in college and later took a refresher course at Crafton Hills College under Marc Wurmbrand.

“You are never too old to enjoy art,” Johnston said in the news release. “Art has taught me toreally observe what is around me.”

Admission is free. Food, beverages and YAPS merchandise will be available for purchase.

Those who plan to attend are encouraged to RSVP at info@yaps.org or 909-790-1440.

YAPS is a no-kill nonprofit animal rescue that strives to prevent the euthanasia of dogs and cats in animal shelters throughout the region by providing animals a temporary home until a permanent home can be found, according to the news release. It also takes in pets from people who can no longer have them at home.

In 2021, 402 pets were adopted from YAPS, according to the news release.

The Yucaipa Animal Placement Society is at 11937 13th St., Yucaipa. For information, go to YAPS.org.
