Ireland Offers Reduced Tuition Fees for Ukrainian Students

The Irish government has offered reduced higher education fees for Ukrainian students, permitting them in the country under European fee status.

According to the High Education Minister, Simon Harris, Ukrainian nationals would also have access to students’ grants and support, including training at language centers for those who need it, SchengenVisaInfo.com reports.

“My Department, the Government and our sector will do everything we can to support and welcome students from #Ukraine and to also provide support in terms of English language classes in communities,” Harris captioned his statement on Twitter.

He also pointed out that a “personalised assessment” would be available for incoming Ukrainians in order to help them find work that’s suitable to their skills and qualifications.

“Preparing for a virtual meeting with European counterparts and EU Commissioner Gabriel Mariya later today to discuss Ukraine and how we can coordinate at an EU level to support students, researchers & lecturers from Ukraine. I want to see an EU-wide scholarship scheme created,” he wrote in a post published in the recent hours.

Following a meeting with EU Commissioner Mariya, Harris said that it is essential for Ukrainian students to have access to education throughout this period and that his government was ready to any EU decision in order to help students maintain their education process.

In addition, the Irish Federation of University Teachers (IFUT) called on universities and colleges in the country to offer support to students, researchers and lecturers from Ukraine.

The federation proposed that researchers and academics temporarily get engaged in their areas of specialization, initially for one year. A similar alternative should be offered to students, the federation urges, enabling Ukrainian students to continue their studies in Ireland “until such time as the situation in Ukraine returns to some acceptable level of safety and stability.”

Previously, the Hungarian government announced it was working hard to provide accommodation, jobs and school places for Ukrainian students, as the neighboring country of the warzone has opened its doors for more than 104,000 refugees since the Russian invasion.

“Hungary is also sending “unprecedented amounts of food and fuel” to Transcarpathia, the western Ukrainian region with a sizable ethnic Hungarian population. The UN is projecting some 250,000 refugees arriving in Hungary before the end of the war,” the Hungarian Prime Minister, Viktor Orban noted.

According to UNHCR, about three million refugees had fled from Ukraine, triggering another migration crisis in the EU, similar to the one in 2015, when 1.3 million sought asylum in the 27-nation-bloc.
