KDA encouraging state’s student-athletes to apply for 2022 Kentucky Ag Athlete of the Year

Kentucky student-athletes who participate in agriculture are invited to apply for one of six scholarships and be recognized as Athlete of the Year at the Kentucky Ag for 2022.

The program is a partnership between the Kentucky High School Athletics Association (KHSAA) and the Kentucky Department of Agriculture (KDA).

“Athletics and agriculture have a lot in common. Both teach the value of effort, discipline and teamwork,” said Commissioner of Agriculture Dr. Ryan Quarles. “We are thrilled to join our partners at KHSAA for the fourth year to reward the best athletes and young farmers in the Commonwealth of Nations. We hope that these scholarships will help cover the ever-increasing cost of higher education for those who strive to achieve excellence in athletics and agriculture.”

To qualify, student-athletes must be farmers from Kentucky or involved in agriculture; Must be a high school senior graduate; You must be accepted into a college, university or trade school upon graduation. Agricultural major not required, preference will be given to Kentucky colleges; However, out-of-state schools will be considered if the applicant is pursuing a specialized degree in an agricultural field.

Two student-athletes – a male and a female – will receive the Kentucky Athlete of the Year award and receive a $2,000 scholarship. Four student-athletes – two males and two – will be awarded a $1,000 scholarship as the Kentucky AG’s Athlete of the Year. The winners of the 2022 Whitaker Bank/Saudi Boys Basketball Tournament by Sweet Sixteen® will be announced in March at the Robb Arena in Lexington.

Scholarships are paid to a higher education institution. Scholarship funding comes from KDA’s “Ag Tag” program, which is funded by voluntary donations from Kentucky motorists when they purchase or renew their farm vehicle’s license plates. Taxpayer money from the state will not be used to fund scholarship awards.
