Tony and Claudia Bruno and their friends Eleanor and Roger Dolan form the scholarship in memory of their son, who died in 1999 at the age of 34.

“We are very grateful for the generosity of the Little Silver Fire company that ensures scholarships are available to students with disabilities while honoring the memory of a wonderful man, Anthony ‘TJ’ Bruno,” said Nancy Carey, Vice President of Advancement at Brookdale Community College.

The Little Silver Volunteer Fire Company Memorial Golf Outing for the TJ Bruno Scholarship Fund and the Chrissy D. Shaheen Memorial Foundation provides funds for the scholarship. Committee members Tom Ankiewicz and Betsy Shaheen-Barnett, of Builders General Supply Co., Fire Chief Tom Smith, Tim Spencer, and Chief Dan Kelly, of Little Silver Volunteer Fire Company, No. 1, presented the check to Brookdale.

The scholarship provides tuition assistance annually to ten students who will attend Brookdale in the fall.

“Students have a great passion for what they do, and with all the challenges they might face, they keep moving forward,” said Tim Spencer. “They give 110% in interviews. They give 110% for everything they do.” Little Silver Volunteer Fire Company No. 1.

TJ came to Brookdale through the EXCEL disability program and was a member of the Little Silver Fire Department. Although he struggled with disability challenges, he was still competitive, could drive himself, take care of himself, and live independently.

“TJ was just a special member for us,” Spencer said. “He was our photographer and he was a fire police officer.”

LSVFC has supported students with disabilities planning to attend Brookdale for twenty years.

The deadline for this year’s scholarship application is June 2, 2022. Students can apply here. For more information, send an email to Foundation@brookdalecc.edu.
