Local college students earn scholarships at Baldwin Wallace University

Students from our region were among more than 660 students awarded scholarships at Baldwin Wallace University this fall. BW has a long history of scholarship support from alumni, faculty, trustees, and friends. More than 400 named scholarships provide more than $3.8 million to help students attend, continue, and graduate from BW. The following local students have been awarded scholarships:

Nicole Babik is from Medina, Graduated from Highland High School majoring in Middle Childhood Education, receiving an Oren Class of 1929 and a Ruth Merkle Scholarship.

Emily Bachman is from Town City, Graduated from Mother of Divine Grace majoring in Chemistry, Emma C-Talke Scholarship.

Medina’s Gabrielle Buchtinec, a Medina Senior High School graduate majoring in light/moderate educational needs, is the recipient of the Ted & Irene Theodore Scholarship.

City of the City’s Grace Buchtenk, a City Senior High School graduate majoring in light/moderate educational needs, is a Ted and Erin Theodore Scholarship.

City Day Amanda, a City Senior High School graduate specializing in Psychology, has been awarded the Theo and Bill Moll Scholarship.

City’s Jack Erdam, a Buckeye Senior High School graduate majoring in early childhood education, received the Jerry Jarrett Scholarship.

Garrett Josek from Al-Madinah Al-Munawwarah, a graduate of Al-Madina Senior Secondary School majoring in Management, has been awarded the Boesel School of Business – Undergraduate Scholarship.

Kelsey Hunter of Medina, a Medina Senior High School graduate majoring in early childhood education, was awarded a 1929 Oren Class Scholarship and a Ruth Merkle Scholarship.

Mdina Mackenzie Heard, a graduate of Greater Punxsutawney High School majoring in music education, has received the Gloria B. Ewing Music Scholarship and the Lee and Agilek Zabis Scholarship for Music Education.

City of Town Sarah Lowe, a Walsh Jesuit High School graduate specializing in digital marketing, has been awarded the Vincent K. Petrella Scholarship.

Hanna Majak is from Medina, Graduated from Brunswick High School majoring in Marketing and Human Resource Management, Desich Family Community Impact Scholarship.

Madi Miller from Al-Madinah Al-Munawwarah, Al-Madinah Senior High School graduate majoring in Pre-Health/Physical Therapy, received Emma Louise Gerhard Scholarship.

City’s Austin Olsavsky, City Senior High School graduate specializing in national security, and recipient of the Barber/Finlayson Scholarship.

Wade Schmidt from Medina, a graduate of Medina Senior Secondary School, and recipient of the Marcel C. Kern Scholarship.

City’s Jacob Stahl, a Buckeye High School graduate, received an Elizabeth and William Triohaft scholarship.

Annaliese Tuma from Medina, a graduate of Brunswick High School specializing in dance and theater movement, and a Vince and Laurene Young Scholarship.

Brunswick’s Charles Bernhardt, a Brunswick High School graduate majoring in digital media and design, is the recipient of the Theo and Bill Moll Scholarship.

Healy Burgess of Brunswick, a graduate of Brunswick High School majoring in Psychology and Sociology, is a William F. Grady Scholarship.

Sarah Kiss from Brunswick, a graduate of the Brunswick High School specializing in Accounting and Business Administration, has been awarded the Boesel School of Business – Undergraduate Scholarship.

Brunswick’s Dina Dikdok, a Buckeye Senior High School graduate majoring in engineering, is an Austin E. Knowlton Foundation Scholarship.

Hinckley’s Ariana Dodds, a Brunswick High School graduate majoring in Adolescent and Youth Education and Integrated English Language Arts, is the recipient of the Amelia and Clara Harding Scholarship.

Andras Fabian of Hinckley, a Highland High School graduate majoring in a cybersecurity analyst, is the recipient of the Eleanor Miller Gillig Scholarship and the George Forbes Scholarship.

Colin Kalina of Hinckley, a graduate of Highland High School majoring in light/intermediate educational needs, is an Elizabeth and William Triohaft Scholarship.

Alexander Crenov of Brunswick, a graduate of Cuyahoga Heights High School majoring in Sports Management and History, was awarded the George Gramm Scholarship for Promising History Students and Theo and Bill Moll Scholarship.

Alexander Ludwick of Brunswick, a graduate of Padua Franciscan High School majoring in Business Administration, is an Elizabeth and William Triohaft Scholarship.

Brunswick’s Trev Mackie, a Brunswick High School graduate majoring in Business Administration, is a David and Mildred Bird Scholarship recipient.

Maddy Macia is from Brunswick, graduated from Brunswick High School majoring in Music Theory, recipient of the Karl and Margaret Schluer Scholarship.

Dom Monaco from Valley City, a graduate of Buckeye Senior High School and majoring in ex-health/physiotherapy, has been awarded the Carol E. Randall Scholarship and the Milton and Mary Oaks Scholarship.

Brooke Nekich of Brunswick, a Brunswick High School graduate majoring in environmental sciences, has been awarded the Hattie & Zella Warner Scholarship.

Alison O’Connell is from Brunswick, graduated from Brunswick High School with a major in Middle Childhood Education, Alpha Sigma Lambda Scholarship.

Brunswick’s Molly Oswald, a Brunswick High School graduate majoring in Digital Marketing and Public Relations, has received the Bussell Business School – Undergraduate Scholarship, George and Fran Boyer Scholarship, and Isabel Marting Scholarship.

Brunswick’s Abby Rudolph, a Brunswick High School graduate majoring in national security, is the recipient of the Harry and Janice Holland Scholarship.

Cooper Siwork of Brunswick, a Brunswick High School graduate majoring in exercise science, has received the Cecil Thomas Scholarship and the George and Fran Boyer Scholarship.

Devin Smith of Brunswick, a graduate of Talmadge High School majoring in Middle Childhood Education, is a John and Joyce Schans Scholarship.

Kayla Stoffers is from Brunswick, Graduated from Brunswick High School majoring in Accounting, Boesel School of Business Scholarship – Undergraduate Scholarship.

BW offers a wide range of financial support to its students – more than $50 million for the 2021-2022 academic year.

Pankow does it again: Nick Bankow is from the city and a City High School graduate, is one of five Baldwin Wallace University footballers to be named to the D3football.com All-Region 4 -Team

Pankow, who was one of 23 Ohio Athletic Conference players selected for the first or second team, now advances to the D3football.com All-American team ballot that will be announced Friday, December 17 before Stagg plays the XLVIII pot.

Pankow, who received his first OAC award, was named to the first team. He led the team and tied for the second time in the Ohio Athletic Conference in a tackle with a career-high 86 and was second on the team and ninth in the league with 11.5 best tackles to lose. Pankoff also scored four high-level sacks, two best interceptions of their career, and forced his career first to falter. As for his career, Bankoff was an All-OAC player in 2021. He played and started in 22 games after transferring from NCAA Division II Ashland University. Pankoff scored 189 assists, 19 saves, six sacks, five assists, two interceptions, forced one into confusion, and recovered one stumble. Off the field, he is a two-time All-OAC Academic Representative, college sports information directors of America’s Academic All-District 7 selection, student Dean’s List, Jacket Scholar, and a member of the Chi Alpha Sigma and Dayton C. Miller Honorary Awards.

In addition, BW head coach Jim Hilvert, who has just completed his fifth season, was named OAC Coach of the Year for the first time. Hilfert led the Yellow Vests to a record 8-2 and a second place finish in the OAC with a 7-2 mark. He has a record of 29-13 in the BW with a league record of 23-12. Hilfert has a team coaching record of 95-39 in 11 seasons. During his tenure, Hilfert mentored 34 OAC picks, 59 all OAC academic staff members, and four college sports infomers.

Muskingum University: Valley City native Hailey Wilson, recently started on the Muskingum University circuit at Omicron Delta Kappa, the National Leadership Honor Society. The association welcomed 350 new freshmen from 17 universities during October 2021.

Students starting in the community must be sophomores, juniors, seniors, or graduate students/professionals in the top 35% of their class, demonstrate leadership experience in at least one of the five pillars, and embrace the ideals of the ODK. Less than five percent of students on campus are invited to join each year.

The University of Findlay: The University of Findlay’s seniors recently gave a fall prom. Local students include Madison Severanek from Brunswick, who performed “Duet in C Major” by Franz Wilhelm Ferling, R. Voxman on the clarinet and Kimberly Sprungl of Hinckley, who performed Benjamin Godard’s Idylle on the flute.

University of Miami: Hinckley resident Melanie Hamlet applies the tools of science, education and conservation to become a leader in the conservation community. In December 2021, Hamlet completed her master’s course with a master’s degree in Biological Sciences Teaching from the University of Miami through the Dragonfly Project.

Since joining the Master’s Program in Advanced Inquiry Program (AIP) in 2019, Hamlett has taken online courses from the University of Miami, while also participating in field and field studies at the Cleveland Metroparks Zoo and conducting projects that have made a difference in the Hinckley area.

Throughout her time at AIP, Hamlett developed a master plan – a kind of personal mission statement for what she wanted to achieve in the program. In several of her master’s courses, Hamlet has designed projects supporting this plan, which culminate in a final file, “Empowering Students to Be Environmental Stewards in and Out of the Classroom,” presented in the Capstone Course.

Hamlet is a seventh grade teacher at Buckeye Junior High School.
