Local high school students to be awarded ‘Academic Book Scholarships’ during MLK prayer breakfast

Hattiesburg, MS (WDAM) – Scholarships will be awarded to eligible local high school students from a branch of the Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. , during Martin Luther King Jr.’s 16th Annual Ecumenical Prayer and Ethnic Breakfast at the University of Southern Mississippi.

Breakfast is scheduled to begin at 7:30 AM on January 17 at the THAAD Cochran Center on the Hattiesburg campus.

Entry is free, but seats will be limited and masks will be required, according to COVID-19 protocol.

The Academic Writers Fraternity Scholarships will be awarded during the program to students from district high schools who plan to attend college next fall and have been recommended by their high school academic advisors.

The scholarship is awarded jointly with the Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity Program “Going to High School – Going to College”. Founded in 1922, this program focuses on the importance of completing secondary and tertiary education for future success.

“I am very pleased that we are able to resume the prayer breakfast in person, and I am grateful to our fraternal brother, Dr. Rankins, for being our keynote speaker,” said Eddie Holloway, Dean of Students Emeritus at USC. “We look forward to seeing everyone who can come join us for a nourishing meal and a time of prayerful reflection, friendship, gratitude and goodwill that I hope will inspire the best in all of us for the New Year.”

Presented by chapters of Mu Gamma Lambda and Mu Xi of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. , the event will include a keynote address by the Mississippi Commissioner for Higher Education, Alfred Rankins Jr., as well as the recipients’ recognition of Fraternity, Community Impact, Humanity, the Douglas T. Baker Award and Friend of Alpha Phi Alpha.
