WINDSOR (WBNG) – A local woman collects recyclables to raise money for a scholarship she will give to high school seniors across Broome County.

Over the past eight years, Eva Jean Tennant has collected cans, bottles, and other donations for the Jean Wheeler Memorial Treasure Fund — a grant named after her late granddaughter who died in a car accident at the age of four.

Since the scholarship began in 2014, Tennant has awarded $37,750 to 48 different seniors across the county.

“Kinsey had a really good heart, so we know she would just love to be able to donate money to seniors in Broome County,” Tennant said.

To apply for the scholarship, students must submit a creative project that increases awareness of automobile safety issues involving children. Previous students have submitted pieces of artwork, poetry, and songs.

Tennant said she hopes the grant will prevent future tragedies by encouraging people to strap children into an appropriate car seat every time they’re on the road.

In the past, Tennant has also held carnivals in her community to help raise funds for the scholarship. However, the pandemic has limited what she can do – leaving her to rely solely on collecting cans and bottles to fund this year’s scholarship.

“I have been collecting bottles and cans from whoever would give me the bottles and cans,” she said. “I will drive and pick them up and take them to Greenplot. Right now, I am in dire need of bottles and cans, or we can take cash donations.”

She said she is grateful to all the people who have donated the cans and bottles so far, and is amazed at the amount of work the students have done on their projects to get the scholarship.

“It just makes my heart fill with love that people will take the time and energy to do something that honors my treasure,” Tennant said.

People interested in making a donation or obtaining more information about the scholarship can contact Tennant through their Facebook page.

Applications for the Kenzi Jan Memorial Scholarship will be available at the end of January. The deadline for student submission is March 31, 2022.
