14 month shunt for Ridout Bridge replacement
Victoria Bridge will be replaced this year and next at a cost of approximately $23 million. City officials say the bridge spanning the River Thames at Riddout Street is 93 years old and “at the end of its operational life”. Urgent repairs are required in recent years. A major detour will be carried out for 14 months as the Ridout is closed between Horton Street and the entrance to Thames Park. A temporary bridge will be constructed on the west side of the Ridout for pedestrians and cyclists.
BRT East Contract supported
The Council’s Civil Works Committee has unanimously approved a $21 million contract to build Phase One of the East London Connection, the eastern terminus of Bus Rapid Transit. Large excavations will begin on King Street between Wellington and Lyle Streets later this year, with construction taking place in phases from one block to two blocks.

Applications are open for a $3000 scholarship in memory of a 21-year-old city worker who lost his life after an explosion in a rink. The Tim Hickman Memorial Health and Safety Scholarship is awarded to a full-time student in a program related to occupational safety or public health and safety. Applications are due by March 15th.
Old age money eyes on hand
Politicians on the Committee on Community Services and Protection unanimously approved a plan to work with nonprofit housing providers for new regional funding initiatives for heavily subsidized affordable housing. Thousands of units may be at risk across Ontario in the coming years, as mortgage and financing agreements expire, and repair costs continue to rise on older properties.
