Medina Valley High School senior hopes to make her mom proud with full-ride scholarship to Yale University

The first year can be the year to make important decisions – from choosing your next school to applying for scholarships. So how would you react to finding out that you got a full scholarship to a well-known Ivy League school?

Aya Kassem, a student at Valley City High School, says she was running and screaming in the school corridor when she found out her next destination after graduation was Yale University.

It’s something that wouldn’t have happened if you hadn’t followed a gut feeling.

“At first, I didn’t believe I could have it,” Qasim said. “I thought I didn’t have what it takes. In fact, I almost didn’t place my order, and then I did.”

Kassem was referring to the QuestBridge National College Match Scholarship. The goal is to connect high-achieving seniors from low-income families to college.

Qasim says she is happy to have managed her future, an opportunity her immigrant mother did not have.

“She’s my role model,” Qasim said. “She cares a lot, not only for her family but also for the people around her. She immigrated here and resumed[her life]. She always told me I had a life 10 times better than her.”

Kassem will be pursuing a degree in computer science and we hope it will add more female representation to the field.

Thanks to free tuition, room and board, textbooks, and more, she says, this means “a brighter future for, like, my offspring and grandchildren.”

Kasem said she was inspired to go to Yale University after watching the “Gilmore Girls” TV show.

All the best to you, Aya!
