Merck Foundation Calls for Application for Scholarships for Doctors in Critical and Underserved Specialties in Africa and Developing Countries

Mumbai, Maharashtra, India and Monrovia, Liberia – Business Wire India Merck, the charitable arm of Merck KGaA Germany, has announced the call for applications for medical training scholarships for healthcare providers in critical and underserved specialties of medical graduates from Africa and developing countries.

All Merck Foundation scholarships are awarded to citizens of African countries, developing countries, and disadvantaged communities according to the Global Human Development Index List of Developing Countries. See the link: http://hdr.undp.org/en/content/latest-human-development-index-ranking • The Merck Foundation Scientific Committee and the Academic Partners Scientific Committee will focus on African countries with a particular focus on French-speakers and Portuguese speakers and Small Island Developing States (SIDS), with the aim of building healthcare capacity and transforming patient care into a public sector that is under pressure due to its limited resources. Therefore, applications from Ministries of Health (MOH) or medical societies are preferred. In the case of individual applications, a letter of recommendation from the Ministry of Health or medical associations in these countries will be requested indicating your country’s gap in the specific specialty and the goal of improving access to equitable, high-quality patient care in your community.

• Furthermore, the Merck Foundation Scientific Committee will consider in the selection process the following factors when needed: HDI, population, number of eligible applications received from each country, and the number of scholarships already awarded to each country in such disciplines.

• Furthermore, Merck Foundation plans to offer English language courses to applicants from French and Portuguese speaking African countries and also to Latin American countries, to give them equal opportunity to benefit from specialized online training that is provided in English only (list of online courses mentioned above).

• In the case of on-campus clinical training scholarship offered in India, such as Fertility and Embryology Training and Fellowship in Oncology, translators will be provided to non-English speaking researchers throughout their training programme.

• Ministries of health and medical societies in African and developing countries can submit applications to: info@merck-foundation.com Merck may request a financial statement to prove monthly income – 1 month salary/pay slip or 3-month salary statement or bank statement, for official purposes.
