Michael Richards Named CUNYAC/HSS Scholar-Athlete of the Month

Flushing, New York – The City University of New York Athletic Conference (CUNYAC) has selected a senior Baruch College student, Michael Richards, as Athlete of the Month for December 2021, as Athlete Researcher of the Month for CUNYAC Hospital/Special Surgery.

Richards, a Brooklyn resident, is the starting guard for the Bearkats men’s basketball program, majoring in accounting with an average of 3,755 points. He is now a two-time recipient of the CUNYAC/HSS Mathematical Scholar of the Month.

“It’s a great honor to be awarded the title of Math Scholar at CUNYAC for the second time,” Richards said. “I’ve worked so hard this semester, so I’m very happy to be recognized.”

Richards is one of the few students selected in New York City to be part of Macaulay Honors College, a highly selective program where promising students in New York receive financial and academic support to advance their leadership potential and graduate debt-free. Baruch College provides Macaulay students with a solid foundation in the liberal arts through small, intellectually engaged classes that form the basis for pre-professional programs in business and public affairs or advanced studies in the arts and sciences.

On the court, Richards started in all four of Baruch’s competitions in December, leading the Beerkats to a record 3-1. In a road conference to beat arch rival Hunter, the captain produced 12 points (6-10 FG), four assists, and a pair of steals. He followed that up with 10 points, four rebounds, two assists and three steals in a non-conference win over SUNY Maritime. Richards added six points, a pair of assists and four more steals in the win over Merchant Marine.

Richards is back this season to end his football career and is an integral part of the Bearcats looking to return to the CUNYAC Championship game. In 2019-20, he was named to the CUNYAC Men’s Basketball All Championship Team while helping Baruch reach the conference final and secure a place in the ECAC Division III Postseason Championship. He was also a member of Team Baruch 2018-19 that won the CUNYAC Championship and advanced to the NCAA Championship.

Off the field, Richards is CUNYAC’s 2020 Winter/Spring Athletic Scholar and Academic Honorary Baruch Athletic Director. The guard also received NABC Academic Court Honorary Recognition, which exemplifies what it means to be an NCAA Division III student-athlete.

The advice I would give Richards said would be to get your work done early, ask any questions you might have, and manage your time with the professors. family. You also have to do your best in every practice because you never know what could happen in the future.”

Michael is a good student and a hardworking member of the Bearcats basketball team; Younger players can search for it.
