Michigan’s Oakland University mistakenly told 5,500 students they won a $48,000 scholarship

Dubai, United Arab Emirates (CNN) – A Michigan university has sent email notifications to thousands of students notifying them of a $48,000 scholarship, but the email was sent in error.

It’s the second university in Michigan to make a mistake like this in January.

On January 4, the University of Oakland in Rochester Hills, 28 miles outside of Detroit, Michigan, learned that due to “human error,” the undergraduate application system sent 5,500 email notifications to accepted students who had received one of the university’s highest awards, the award Platinum Presidential Scholar at $12,000 annually for four years.

“Unfortunately, the students who received the letter did not meet the eligibility requirements for this award, but they did qualify for various levels of the university’s scholarship awards,” Brian Burley, director of media relations at the University of Auckland told CNN in a statement Monday. “While the emails were sent in error, OU notifies students of scholarship awards through official scholarship award letters sent to students via US mail.”

The University of Auckland Platinum Presidential Scholarship is not dependent on application, according to Burley. All students are considered and given entry to freshmen who have achieved a high school GPA of 3.90 or higher and a score of 1450 or higher on the SAT (ACT composite score of 33 or higher).

Burley said, “These 5,500 students, made up of freshmen and transfer students, were offered various levels of scholarships, but did not qualify for the Platinum Presidential Scholarship, nor did they yet accept their scholarship award in their student portal “. “They were meant to receive a different message about the awards for which they qualified.”

A student, who was not even eligible, also received an occasional notice, according to CNN affiliate WXYZ.

Charmaine Brown said she was thrilled when she received the school email.

“When they sent that email, I was like ‘Wow, this is my escape, that’s all I wanted,'” Brown said.

The average tuition fee for in-state freshmen and sophomores is $13,934, according to the University of Auckland website, with room and board averaging $11,192 per year.

Similar mistakes, two different schools

After the Oakland mistake, just 30 miles down the road at Central Michigan University, university officials found themselves apologizing for a similar incident two weeks later.

A notification was mistakenly sent to 58 students informing them that they had received the university’s prestigious Centralis Scholar Award, which includes admission to the CMU Honors Program, full tuition, room and board for four years and a $5,000 study away award.

Now, the university says it is reaching out to affected students to “make it right” and award them an amount equivalent to a full scholarship.

But that is not the case at the University of Auckland, according to officials.

“The University of Auckland plans to honor the various scholarships for which students have qualified and encouraged them to submit updated transcripts and any new test scores between now and the fall semester to see if they qualify for additional scholarships,” said Byerley.

Within two hours of the error, the OU said they sent an immediate correction and the college admissions team scheduled phone calls to explain the situation to students they reached out to, Burley said.

In a follow-up email apology on January 5, the university said: “We have checked our email data extraction procedures to ensure this does not happen again. We feel very bad that you received this incorrect contact and hope he will still consider attending the University of Auckland.”

In the fall of 2021, the University of Auckland presented 223 Platinum Awards to Presidential Scholars; He said 47 of those students chose to register. As of now, 162 students have qualified for the scholarship and applied for Fall 2022, 62 students have been accepted so far. Final numbers will be announced in September after registration opens.
