Nearly 100 student scholarships available

In partnership with The Repository, the Stark Community Foundation, every Monday, highlights positive events in our community. Here’s the good news on Mondays!

Many students find it financially difficult to invest in themselves and their future through advanced education.

Fortunately, individuals, families and local businesses see the value of students achieving their educational dreams and have partnered with the Stark Community Foundation to make those dreams come true.

As one of the primary sources of scholarship support in our community, the Foundation and family of donors offer nearly 100 scholarship opportunities to benefit students from Stark and Carroll counties. Applications for the 2022-2023 academic year are now available, the deadline for most of them is April 1.

Students can apply for the majority of scholarships through the Foundation’s General Scholarship Application. This single application will automatically apply students to scholarships for which they qualify and suggest to others that they are eligible for which additional articles or information are required.

Some scholarship opportunities fall outside the April 1 deadline and require a separate application. To determine eligibility for these independent opportunities, students may take a short eligibility test found on the application page of the institution’s online scholarship portal.

More than $600,000 in scholarships were awarded to local students from generous individuals, families, and businesses last year—including the late John G and Betty J. Meek. In 2005 John, a retired Timken control analyst, and his wife Betty established a scholarship fund through the Stark Community Foundation to benefit Stark County students who were accepted into engineering programs in Ohio.

Despite the deaths of both John and Betty, their scholarship fund has provided more than $575,000 in financial assistance from the start to help aspiring engineers continue their education. In the past year alone, Mix’s passion for learning and the next generation of Stark County leaders have ensured that 19 students receive scholarships from their fund.

As a trusted partner for the local community, the Stark Community Foundation helps individuals, families, businesses, and nonprofit organizations achieve their charitable goals through a variety of charitable trusts and strategic initiatives. Ranked in the top 10 percent of community-based organizations in the nation, the foundation and its family of donors have given $200 million to nonprofits since 1963.
