Mitchell Community College recently announced the creation of a scholarship in honor of Iridale County Sheriff Darren Campbell. The scholarship is made possible by an anonymous donor from the community seeking to support the community and help students start their careers as law enforcement officers.

Whitney Craven, a current Mitchell Basic Law Enforcement Training (BLET) student, is the first recipient of the Darren E. Campbell Basic Law Enforcement Training Scholarship. After completing the program, Craven hopes to work with the Iredale County Sheriff’s Office, with a preference for a position at the Iredell County Detention Center.

Sheriff Campbell said, “It would be very humbling for someone to present an award in my name.” “I attended BLET at Mitchell Community College. It seems we are helping to raise a new generation because of this donor.”

Campbell has been involved in the college in many positions, including being a former member of the board of trustees of Mitchell Community College.

Mitchell offers five BLET courses annually with a variety of dates to meet student needs. Individuals who are not employed full time can complete the course in one semester with the ‘Semester’ option.

Students who are currently employed full-time can complete the course over two semesters using the “alternating class/night” option. Class formats are 768 hours of training, well above the minimum of 640 hours of training.

In addition, all BLET classes are included in a cross-curricular list of continuing education to better meet students’ needs and goals.

Mitchell’s BLET program has two upcoming study opportunities – a “semester” option based in Statesville beginning January 10, 2022, and a “alternating semester” option based in Mooresville beginning January 24, 2022.
