New nursing scholar program announced at New River Community College

Pulaski, Virginia (WDBJ) — New River Community College has announced a new program for NRCC nursing scholars for entry-level and high school seniors who demonstrate an interest and ability in the applied sciences of nursing from the NRCC, according to the college.

“This new nursing scholarship creates opportunities for students in New River Valley to obtain a debt-free education in a demanding and rewarding career path,” said Pat Hooper, President of NRCC. “The program will not only change the lives of our students, but also prepare them to serve their communities as healthcare heroes.”

The scholarship contains two first-level and second-level awards. High school juniors and seniors who attend public, private, or home education and reside in the NRCC service area that includes Floyd, Giles, Montgomery, Pulaski, and Radford City counties may apply for Level 1 scholarships.

Up to five NRCC area nursing students will receive a Level 1 scholarship that provides in-state tuition, college fees, and textbooks for five core program courses to be completed by high school graduation.

Students who have been awarded a Level 1 scholarship and have completed the five core courses with a grade of “B” or better may apply for a Level 2 scholarship. Students must also complete an Application for Free Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) and meet all NRCC admission requirements for Access to Community College Education (ACCE) prior to submitting their Tier II scholarship application.

The Level Two Scholarship provides tuition and college fees for four semesters of required courses in the AAS Nursing degree, all required textbooks, and all required fees.

Applicants must have a high school GPA of 3.75 or better and demonstrate high levels of leadership and citizenship in the application essays. In addition, second-level applicants must have submitted and accepted the NRCC ACCE Scholarship to be eligible for the Level Two Scholarship for Nursing Scholars.

The scholarship application will be available online starting February 10, 2022, and the application deadline is March 15, 2022. For more information about the NRCC Nursing Scholars Program, contact Lynn Taylor at (540)674-3631 or ltaylor@nr.edu. Edo.
