Oakland Education Association pursues farcical “safety” bargaining

The outbreak and quarantine have completely disrupted classrooms in the Oakland Unified School District (OUSD) as the Omicron variant causes cases and hospitalizations in Alameda County. To defend themselves, the teachers made a series of sick forays. The students began an indefinite strike last Monday.

In order to contain the growing anger, the Oakland Education Association (OEA) has threatened to call a vote for a “safety” strike with completely helpless demands that will do almost nothing to protect students, teachers and staff from infection.

According to an email from the OEA sent to teachers, their demands are:

  1. A weekly voluntary test is available to students and staff in all schools
  2. High quality masks available to all students and staff
  3. An adult covers every vacant place in the classroom
