Ohio State Cornerback Sevyn Banks Enters Transfer Portal

Sevyn Banks is using his extra year of college eligibility, but he won’t be in Ohio.

After Ryan Day said Monday that banks would be “moving” out of Ohio, the banks chose to go into the transfer portal rather than enter the 2022 NFL Draft.

Banks, who played four seasons at Ohio State and graduated from college in December, has another year of collegiate eligibility after the NCAA gave all players a free year of eligibility in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic. While Banks left the door open in his statement for a possible return to Ohio, it’s uncertain whether he will be welcomed back to the Buckeyes, especially given that they are currently seven scholarships that exceed the 85-man limit.

While Banks started every game for Cornerback in 2020 and was expected to be the Buckeyes’ player of the year in 2021, he was plagued by injury his final season at Ohio State as he was both in and out of the squad. With Denzel Burke and Cameron Brown returning for the 2022 season, Banks is unlikely to be a starter if he stays at Ohio State for his fifth year.

Expected to be a potential first-round pick in the 2021 season, Banks was not expected to be selected before the late rounds if he remained in the 2022 draft class. However, playing another season of college football elsewhere, could empower Banks of rebuilding his stock for the 2023 NFL Draft.

With Banks gone, Ohio State now has seven scholarships on the 2022 list. Behind Burke and Brown, the rest of the Buckeyes’ current squad consists of sophomore Red College sophomore Leonde Cavazos, freshmen Jordan Hancock and Jakaylyn Johnson, and real freshmen Jayer Brown and Ryan Turner.
