The NIL and NCAA transfer gate policies have changed college football, but it has also had some unintended consequences. Ole Miss Senior Coach Lynn Kevin It says “free agency” has taken root at the college level.
As his team prepares to face Baylor in the Allstate Sugar Bowl, Kiffin spoke with the media and broached the topics of the early signing period and the transfer gate. Kevin said there are now war bids for recruits and portal players, and that’s something he’s learning to manage.
“I don’t think people really say it that way, but let’s make no mistake, we have free agency in college football,” Kevin said, at InsideTheRebels. “And the kids go where they’re going to pay more. Nobody says that maybe, but if the kid said, ‘That’s what I’m getting here for for nothing.'” That’s what it is. Free agency is set up in college football… Except you can’t tie people up with a contract. They can go at any time. It’s a new world we live in. Sometimes they want to come over and tell you, ‘I’m going to get that much money’ If you go there.’This is just a whole new thing to deal with.’
Kevin also said that all of this change is having a negative impact on players at the high school level. Some players who might have been about to receive a college scholarship may now end up without one because teams are filling their individual needs through the transfer portal. It also makes it more difficult for Kiffin to manage his own list.
Kevin said, “(The NCAA) gave a break this year with the additions. And as you’re out on the road, there’s a lot of frustration with the small college coaches and high school coaches, because they feel like kids who were right about to take performances and go to places that were at the bottom of the Class, it’s not like that anymore. Because people don’t… use them for transfers. And now they have kids in high school with nowhere to go where they’d have places. Like anything, usually when you create something to solve this problem here, it It creates other problems. There are a lot of problems with this. You have your buddies, and now you’re dealing with guys… they want to go… but you still want them to play the game or practice and stuff. Now we already have guys in the free agency market that go to hits who still practice and play here. “

The early signing period begins on Wednesday, December 15th, and it will be interesting to see how many teams are receiving fewer players due to potential additions to the gate.
