This is the second year in a row that the 30th coronavirus pandemic has been haltedNS of the event, which was set to attract 1,600 competing students from 50 countries.

Postponed from last year, the Winter Universiade was scheduled to run from December 11-21 in central and eastern Switzerland. But the recent travel restrictions, announced last week, have again made it impractical to organize an event that attracts competitors, viewers and media from multiple countries.

Switzerland chose a team of 43 students to participate in the sporting event.

“We are sad and sorry that we will not be able to welcome athletes from all over the world, who have been intensively preparing for their competitions,” said event president Guido Graf.

The Winter Universiade is organized by FISU and has been holding Winter and Summer Games every two years since 1959.

Switzerland is one of several countries that have banned flights to South Africa and imposed quarantine restrictions on people entering from a growing list of other countries. This comes after the discovery of the Omicron Covid variant that has caused great concerns due to the large number of mutations appearing on it.

On Sunday, Switzerland reported its first suspected case of a person with the Omicron variant.
