With the Holiday Hoopla dinner canceled, the silent auction is moving in favor of TVET students online. It will last until December 8, next Wednesday. The link is available here.
The Keweenaw Coalition for Economic Development is responsible for raising funds for a $1,000 scholarship for CTE students at 11 high schools across the Copper Country Intermediate School District. The fund is managed by the Portage Health Foundation.
There are 42 items up for auction this year, either donated by several companies in the area or made by welding students. Four hockey tickets, entry to Mont Ripley Tubing Park, a trip for two to the Isle Royale via seaplane, or a handcrafted fire pit and wood splitter are some of the highlights.

While the COVID pandemic continues to stifle our efforts to bring people together for our annual auction, it does not stifle our efforts to support the future of our youth. This year we continue our efforts to raise funds to support students looking to pursue a skilled career after high school. Two years ago, we announced our partnership with the Portage Health Foundation ensuring that a top graduate student from every high school in Baraga, Houghton, Kewenau and Ontonagon counties including Horizons High School receives $1,000 scholarships to pursue a degree, one or a two-year skilled trades program. The PHF assumed that scholarships would be provided on an annual basis and KEDA committed to continuing to raise funds annually for the scholarship award established by the PHF.
The annual silent auction is only possible due to generously donated items, our school districts, and Copper Country ISD CTE classes that have specifically designed items to support this skilled crafts auction. Without this support, we will not be able to provide these scholarships.
