River Hawks Open Conference Play at Stony Brook

Lowell, Mass. – The UMass Lowell baseball team (4-10, 0-0 AE) will begin America East play this weekend against the Stony Brook Seawolves (4-11, 0-0 AE). Game one of the three-game series is set for Friday, March 18 at 3 pm at Joe Nation Field.

The River Hawks are 12-18 all-time against the Seawolves. Stony Brook has a 4-1 record over the last five games against UMass Lowell, looking to win a second straight meeting. The River Hawks last victory over the Seawolves came in the front half of a doubleheader on April 10, 2021, a 4-3 win at Lelacheur Park. The last time UMass Lowell beat Stony Brook on the road was May 18, 2019, an 8-1 victory.

LOOKING AT UMASS LOWELL

UMass Lowell enters the weekend after going 1-4 in a 14-day road trip to the Carolinas last week. The River Hawks fell twice to the Duke Blue Devils before finishing 1-2 over the weekend against College of Charleston. Senior Robert Gallagher (Mullica Hill, NJ) leads the team batting .367 with nine runs, 18 hits, and 13 RBIs. The senior has hit three home runs on the year, tied for the team lead. Fellow senior Gerry Siracusa (Kinnelon, NJ) is hitting .339 on the year, with three home runs, 14 runs, 19 hits, and four doubles. The freshman duo of Brandon Fish (Londonderry, NH) and Jacob Humphrey (Standish, ME.) have combined for 16 runs, 27 hits, and 19 RBIs. The rookies are batting .278 and .255 on the season, respectively.

ON THE MOUND

Freshman LJ Keevan (Holden, Mass.) continues to impress in his rookie campaign, with a 2-1 record and a 3.91 ERA. The freshman has 17 strikesouts in 23.0 innings. Graduate student Ryan Tole (Westfield, Mass.) leads the team with 22 strikeouts in 16.0 innings this season. Towle has an 8.44 ERA with a 1-2 record.

SCOUTING THE SEAWOLVES

Stony Brook welcomes the River Hawks after a 4-11 non-conference record to open the season. The Seawolves dropped all three contests against Old Dominion last weekend and most recently defeated Iona 9-1 on Wednesday, March 16. Stanton Leuthner leads the team batting.327 and has a .442 slugging percentage on the season. Shame Paradine and Leuthner are tied with a team-high 17 hits each. Four other Seawolves have double-digit hits on the year. On the mound, Kyle Johnson leads the way with 16 strikesouts on the year. Nick DeGennaro has a team-best .93 ERA in two starts this season.

STOLEN GOODS

As a unit, the River Hawks have stolen 23 bases on 25 attempts this season. Robert Gallagher has eight stolen bases on the year in eight attempts. Jacob Humphrey is 7-7 on stolen base attempts in his rookie campaign. Sophomore Fritz Genther (Kingston, NY) is 5-6 in stolen base attempts.

A-OKKKKKK

Ryan Tole leads the pitching core with 22 strikeouts on the year. LJ Keevan has struck out 17 while sophomore Brendan Williams (Auburn, NY) has sat 14 batters this season. Fellow sophomore Michael Quigley (Halifax, Mass.) has struck out eleven. Nine other River Hawks have recorded at least one strikeout this year for UMass Lowell.

GOING YARD

UMass Lowell has hit a collective 12 home runs through 14 games in the 2022 campaign. Gallagher and Siracusa are tied for the team lead in with three homers each. Brandon Fish and junior Cedric Rose (Pittsfield, Mass.) have each sent two over the fences, while junior Ryan Proto (Centerville, Mass.) and Jacob Humphrey each have one home run.
