River Hawks Set for Five-Game Week

Lowell, Mass. – The UMass Lowell baseball team (11-17, 5-7 AE) returns to action with another busy week ahead. The River Hawks will host Merrimack College (9-17-1, 4-5 NEC) on Tuesday night before heading to Amherst to take on Massachusetts (14-9-1, 5-1 A10) on Wednesday afternoon. UMass Lowell will then host conference foe Hartford Hawks (4-20, 3-9 AE) for a weekend series at LeLacheur Park.

The River Hawks enter the week ahead after going 3-1 last week. UMass Lowell beat Dartmouth midweek before going 2-1 against UMBC over the weekend. Freshman Jacob Humphrey (Standish, ME.) led team hitting .533 over four games with a team-high eight hits. The freshman added seven runs and four stolen bases. Senior Gerry Siracusa (Kinnelon, NJ) hit .316 over the four-game stretch, recording six hits and a team-high seven RBIs. Freshman Brandon Fish (Londonderry, NH) hit at a .357 in four starts tallying five hits and four RBIs.


Freshman Brendan Holland (North Andover, Mass.), graduate student Ryan Tole (Westfield, Mass.) and sophomore Michael Quigley (Halifax, Mass.) picked up wins last week for the River Hawks. Towle struck out six batters in 7.0 innings against UMBC on April 9. Freshman LJ Keevan (Holden, Mass.) had another impressive outing on Friday night against the Retrievers, throwing 7.0 innings and sitting six with one earned run.

Tuesday’s matchup will be the 96th all-time meeting between these teams with UMass Lowell holding a 72-21-2 record against Merrimack.


Merrimack comes to Lowell after going 1-3 last weekend with losses to #25 UConn and Mount St. Mary’s. The Warriors won the opening game of the series against Mount St. Mary’s before falling in the final two games. Alex Haba leads the team batting .376 on the year with a team-high 38 hits and 22 runs. Michael Golankiewicz leads the Warriors with 22 RBIs on the season. On the mound, Cedric Gillete has a 5.77 ERA and a 2-3 record. Wyatt Villella leads the team with 23 strikesouts in six appearances.

Massachusetts will welcome the River Hawks after hosting Boston College on Tuesday afternoon in the Baseball Beanpot. The Minutemen are currently on a four-game win streak after beating Harvard and a series sweep of Fordham over the weekend. Cole Hebble is batting .396 in 23 games played this season with team-highs in hits (36) and runs (27). The Minutemen have hit 21 home runs this season, with Drew DeMartino leading the way with six. Kevin Dow leads the pitching core with 30 strikeouts on the year.

The River Hawks went 3-5 last year against the Hawks in a shortened spring season. UMass Lowell will look to snap a two-game losing skid against Hartford.


The Hawks will travel to Lowell after midweek games against Quinnipiac and Army. Hartford is currently 4-20 on the season with a 3-9 conference mark. They have beaten NJIT, Stony Brook, and Binghamton in America East play this season. Tremayne Cobb Jr. leads the team batting .338 on the year with 26 hits and 23 RBIs to go with 10 extra base hits. Ryan Dee leads the pitching core with 20 strikeouts. Dee has a 0-2 record with a 1.48 ERA in 10 appearance this season.


As a unit, the River Hawks have stolen 60 bases on 71 attempts this season. Senior Robert Gallagher (Mullica Hill, NJ) has 21 stolen bases on the year in 21 attempts. Freshman Jacob Humphrey (Standish, ME.) is 18-18 on stolen base attempts in his rookie campaign. Fritz Genther is 7-9 in stolen base attempts and senior Gerry Siracusa (Kinnelon, NJ) is 8-11 on the year.


Ryan Tole leads the pitching core with 48 strikeouts on the year. Joshua Becker and LJ Keevan have each struck out 44 and 38 hitters, respectively. Sophomore Michael Quigley (Halifax, Mass.) has sat 19 batters this season, while fellow sophomore Brendan Williams (Auburn, NY) has struck out fifteen.


UMass Lowell has hit a collective 26 home runs through 28 games in the 2022 campaign. Gallagher, Rose and Siracusa lead the team with five homers on the year. Brandon Fish and junior Ryan Proto (Centerville, Mass.) have each hit three so far this year.
