SA students urged to apply for the free Mauritius-Africa Scholarship

South African students are urged to apply for the Mauritius and Africa Scholarship Program offered by the Government of Mauritius for undergraduate and postgraduate students.

According to the Government of Mauritius, programs at public higher education institutions (HEIs) in Mauritius will start for the academic year 2022, which begins in April 2022.

The Department of Higher Education and Training (DHET) said that South Africans who wish to apply for the scholarship program need to do so before the closing date of January 31.

“The information provided is for applicants from South Africa only. Applicants from other eligible countries should contact their government or a local representative of the Government of Mauritius for information on how to apply,” DHET said.

DHET said applicants should note that this call for applications will be for the April 2022 admission only and the call for October 2022 intake will be published later this year.

“Applicants are encouraged to note that the above deadline differs from the guidelines below, due to the application processing and selection processes that must be completed by DHET as the nominating agency.

DHET noted that “Failure to submit applications and supporting documents by the above due date will result in your application not being considered.”

The scholarship will provide tuition fees and course-related costs of up to MUR 100,000 and a monthly living allowance of MUR 12,500 (R4500).

Students will also be entitled to free basic healthcare in Mauritius public hospitals and a return ticket to and from Mauritius in the most economical way.

“The winners will have to make their own arrangements to pay for the one-way airline tickets and then apply for a refund upon their arrival in Mauritius by submitting the necessary original receipts and documents,” the ministry said.

Meanwhile, successful candidates are required to make provision for all other expenses not covered by this scholarship, for example, additional tuition costs over the offer of tuition, costs of fieldwork, books, and re-examination costs.
