37 students from Monroe County participated in summer 2019 (the last time overseas programs were able to operate before the pandemic), including 12 students from the nonprofit Take Stock in Children.

“Participation in the Experience program was a transformative experience for many students in Monroe County, as it provided them with the opportunity to immerse themselves in another culture and learn what it means to be a young leader in today’s global world,” said Kristina Thomas, Vice President of Youth Programs for Global Learning and Experience at International life. “It also helps with college applications, and many students are even outlining their future fields of study.”

For the summer of 2022, seven new training programs and trainings accredited through the experience’s sister institution, the School of International Training (SIT), offer high school students the opportunity to earn three college credits while studying or training abroad. This expansion will provide more flexibility for students looking to find their career focus, explore their undergraduate majors, and gain core skills – all while making real connections between cultures and making a real impact in the world.

Scholarship recipients will receive a Certificate of Merit from The Experiment in International Living.

Students can apply online at experience.org for a Monroe County scholarship until January 20, 2022. On the program selection page for their application, students must answer “yes” to the question, “Have you been nominated by a mentoring organization?” or partner organization, or high school sending?” Then choose “Monroe County Scholarship” from the selection list.

For 90 years, experience in international life provides cultural exchange for high school students. In immersive three- to four-week programs on five continents, students explore the world through hands-on experiences and residence in local communities through the lens of a specific subject.
