Seven OHIO students receive Gilman International Scholarships to study abroad during 2022

Seven undergraduate students at Ohio State University have been awarded the Gilman Scholarships to study abroad in 2022.

“I commend our Gilman applicants for their work this term,” Christopher Lewis, Director National Competitive Awards Office, He said. “Because of the pandemic, many students’ pursuit of international opportunities has been put on hold. To me, these scholars represent the hope that more Bobcats will come out into the world as multicultural ambassadors and learners.”

Benjamin A. Scholarship Gilman International of the US Department of State is a scholarship program that enables undergraduate students to study or train abroad, gaining the skills necessary for national security and economic competitiveness. It is open to Pell Grant recipients, with the goal of increasing the number and diversity of Americans studying abroad.

These Gilman Awards represent competitive excellence for OHIO student applicants.

The following students have been awarded the Gilman Scholarships:

  • Alison Mingus (Spain, summer 2022, $4,500)
  • Thiago y Nunez (Spain, summer 2022, $4,500)
  • Nia Dumas (Spain, Spring 2022, $4,500)
  • Dylan J.Rines (Italy, Summer 2022, $4,000)
  • Angelia in Bailey (Italy, Spring 2022, $4,500)
  • Gina Ritz (Ireland, summer 2022, $4,500)
  • Raijai M. Franklin (South Korea, Summer 2022, $4,000)

Catherine Marshall, Director of the Office of Global Opportunities, currently serves as the Gilman National Counsellor’s ambassador, advances the Gilman Program profile, provides higher education perspectives for the Gilman Program, and provides guidance to fellows in higher education seeking to increase Gilman’s involvement in their institutions.

“I have supported OHIO students applying to Gilman throughout its nearly 20-year history as a Certified Study Abroad Adviser for the program. Support students as they define the program, develop their statement of purpose and follow-up on projects, identify additional funding sources, and then see their plans come to fruition in the study experience Abroad, it was a memorable experience in my career,” Marshall said.

In addition to the Gilman Scholarship, the Office of Global Opportunities has also facilitated First Passport Scholarship, which funds the costs associated with obtaining a first-time US adult passport for 150 students. Preference was given to first and second year students and Pell Grant holders in the application review, encouraging and supporting access to global mobility for all undergraduate Bobcats students.

Thiago Nunez, a student in the Music Production and Recording Industry Program, is a New Gilman Scholarship recipient and First Passport Scholarship recipient. He is a first-generation bobcat and first-generation Latin American, with a family originally from Argentina.

“I have worked hard to advance to many opportunities to make studying abroad a reality. I want to immerse myself abroad in cultures that will improve my Spanish, so I am well prepared to pursue Latin music production, which is my passion. I didn’t even know I had Gilman yet , but I applied for the First Passport Grant because just having a passport can open up many opportunities in the future. I decided to start as soon as possible, with whatever opportunities OHIO would give me,” Nunez said.

The Gilman Scholarship is open to US undergraduate students at a two- or four-year college or university who are awarded a Pell Grant To participate in study and training abroad programs all over the world.
