#TBT: Men’s Basketball Beats Lamar on Lew Hill Tribute Night

The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) Department of Intercollegiate Athletics is looking back at some of the best moments throughout 2021-22 season every #ThrowbackThursday (#TBT) through August.

RIO GRANDE VALLEY – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) Vaqueros men’s basketball team played arguably their best game of the season on a night during which they paid homage to former head coach Lew Hill.

February 2 was designated Lew Hill Tribute Night as the Vaqueros hosted the Lamar Cardinals at the UTRGV Fieldhouse. UTRGV held a moment of applause before the game, played a tribute video during halftime, and shared fun facts about Coach Hill throughout the game.

It was an emotional night for everyone inside the UTRGV Fieldhouse and the Vaqueros used those emotions to defeat the Cardinals 93-79, which was their highest scoring output of the season.

It was also a career-night for graduate student Marek Nelson as he recorded his first-career double-double with a career-high 30 points and a career-high 10 rebounds. Junior Ricky Nelson also set a new career mark with 14 assists as the Vaqueros dished out a season-high 24 assists that night.

Junior Justin Johnson also recorded a double-double with 24 points and 10 rebounds, it was his second of the season. Graduate student Xavier Johnson put together a great performance as he scored a season-high typing 22 points with a season-high seven assists.

After taking the lead into the locker room at the half, the Vaqueros found themselves trialing early in the second half but a pair of three-pointers from Xavier Johnson fueled a 22-6 UTRGV run to take control of the game. The Vaqueros led by as much as 16 as they put the game away.

The win against Lamar also marked the best shooting night of the season for the Vaqueros as they shot .604 (32-53). The 32 made field goals and nine three-pointers made were the second most in a game this past season.

After the game, the entire UTRGV team went over to Coach Hill’s wife, Renee, and their children, LJ and Elle, to wish them well.

It certainly was a special night for everyone in attendance.
