If a student participates in an OPT prior to completion, USCIS will deduct that amount of time from the student’s permit period after completion of the OPT. Students may only work on an F-1 visa for the duration of their enrollment in an academic program at a US college or university (including OPT/STEM OPT eligibility). Employment must be terminated when the student no longer qualifies to work through the F-1 program.

However, students will still have options to continue working in the United States even if they are no longer eligible to work in the F-1 program.
