The good news finally came.
Early Monday morning, North Carolina State 2023 high school football coach Dylan Smithers called three-star Dylan Smithers. Smothers was told that OSU running appearance coach Tony Alford loved what he saw as a 5-foot-11, 182-pound prospect and was going to receive an offer from Ohio State on Monday.
Congratulations on receiving an offer from

The Smothers were ranked 326th best odds and 19th best in the 2023 cycle, according to 247Sports. It has offerings from 23 Division I schools including Florida State, Michigan State, Pennsylvania State, and Michigan State. Smothers, who also runs the racetrack at Julius L. School. It’s no secret that Ohio State would like to sign two successors in 2023, with five-star top-rated Richard Young selected as the Buckeyes’ first choice. Four-star judge Haynes might be their second choice, but the offer to the Smothers says a lot about how much potential they think he has.
OSU hits the road
In a slightly unexpected turn, last week’s loss to Michigan left Ohio State without a game to prepare for this week. While the defeat still hurts, the now open week has left the Buckeyes coaches free time to kick off as in-house recruiting visits begin this week.
According to 247Sports, at least five of the important 2022 candidates will receive home visits this week.
Four-star quarterback Devin Brown meets the Buckeyes on Monday, while four-star safety team Zion Branch’s Hero Kanu and four-star defensive performer Hero Kanu will get home visits from OSU on Tuesday. On Wednesday, the Buckeyes will turn their attention to safety four-star Xavier Nwankpa and attacking lineman Carson Hinsman.
It makes sense that Ohio State University would prioritize all five of these possibilities before the early signing period on December 15. Sunday’s news that Lincoln Riley will leave Oklahoma for USC may directly affect Brown, Branch and Kano.
Brown, who visited Ohio on November 20, just dropped out of USC last week before the Riley trojans hired. Given both OSU’s crowded quarterback room and the success Riley has had in developing quarterbacks, it would be easy to see why he’d want to rethink breaking up his commitment. On the other hand, it is uncertain whether Riley will pursue Brown, which may depend on whether Sooners quarterback Caleb Williams will join Riley at USC and whether the Trojans can overturn 2023 linebacker Malachi Nelson, who is out of Oklahoma on the evening. Sunday.
The branch has been heading toward OSU for nearly a month now and 16 days may not be enough for USC employees to get a 6-foot-2, 195-pound safe to change their mind. But, USC has been the biggest competition for Branch and his younger brother Zacharias, a broadly accepted four-star 2023 prospect. Perhaps Ohio State University will remind the larger branch on the in-house visit of the Buckeyes safety difficulties in 2018 when Alex Grinch, who is tracking Riley from Oklahoma to become USC’s Defense Coordinator, is the Joint Defense Coordinator and Safety Coach at Ohio State.
Kanu still has one official visit left because he canceled his scheduled official visit to LSU after Ed Orgeron was fired, so it wouldn’t be surprising if Kanu uses that visit at USC, considering he resides in California and has been heavily recruited by Riley and His employees are in Oklahoma.
Regarding Nwankpa, OSU gets into a fight with his Iowa public school over his commitment. Hensmann is also deciding between his public school in his home country (Wisconsin) and the Buckeyes.
With the signing date just two weeks away, this week’s visit will be crucial to the Buckeyes’ efforts to complete the 2022 enlistment chapter.
