Theater of Dare, community theater for the Outer Banks, seeks applicants for the Don Bridge Memorial Scholarship for local high school seniors, as well as current college students, who plan to pursue a degree in the performing arts.
Last year, $8,000 was awarded to four seniors as well as two college students, previous recipients of ToD scholarships.
“Primarily, we raise funds for our scholarships through 50/50 raffles held during productions, as well as merchandise sales,” says Penelope Carroll, scholarship chairperson. “Last season was a bit of a challenge, with only one in-person production, but we managed to pull together a record amount to award our students.”
Scholarship application materials have been sent to area high school guidance offices. The deadline for applying is February 25, and awards will be determined by 25. Interested persons are directly encouraged to apply and may request information from Theater of Dare – by email at firstname.lastname@example.org or by phoning or texting Penelope Carroll at 252 /489-1571.
“As this region’s community theater, we feel an obligation to support young people who are serious in their pursuit of the performing arts as a career,” Carroll continues. “Through the generous support of our audience, it’s been possible for us to help and encourage these students.”
While TOD began the scholarship program a number of years ago, last year it was dubbed the Don Bridge Memorial Scholarship. Don Bridge was a fixture in local theater for many years, and his passing in December 2020 was a blow to his many friends and fans. The board of directors determined that his legacy should live on, encouraging the next generation of actors, writers, directors, musicians, technicians, designers, and animators, as Don did throughout his life.
