UC surprises future Bearcat on Decision Day

Cincinnati (WXIX) – This week, thousands of high school students found out about their admission to the University of Cincinnati in 2022.

For seniors at Hughes STEM High School, the announcement was even more special.

Not only was Benya Coleman accepted into the university, but she also got a scholarship and a full flight to attend.

“I knew how important this was to my family,” Coleman said. “…to get into UCSD, I really wanted to go there and I’m basically a student there now. Something amazing.”

As a Marian Spencer Scholarship recipient, Coleman receives free tuition, room and board and an all-expenses-paid trip to Tanzania.

“I feel like I’m on top of the world right now with a one-in-a-million chance,” Coleman added.

UCSD Vice Dean of Enrollment, Jack Miner, was one of the officials who handed over the scholarship to Coleman.

“[The scholarship is] “A call to celebrate and truly honor the legacy of Marianne Spencer,” Miner said. “Benya is a perfect example of that, and I believe she will do extraordinary things.”

The scholarship opportunity was provided by the University of Cincinnati in its commitment to Cincinnati Public Schools.

Marcus Elliott of the Oyler School was also accepted into the Marian Spencer Scholars program.
